According to new research published in the Indian Journal of Pediatrics, antibiotics are not necessary for treating malnourished children. In a study, doctors from GSVM Medical College, Kanpur, divided 100 malnourished children into two groups. The first group of 50 children was given regular antibiotics, a proper diet, and IV drips in necessary cases.

The second group received the same nutrition and IV infusions when necessary, but no one received antibiotics. The findings of the study showed that both groups recovered comparably, proving that antibiotic usage was not required.

The participants of the study ranged in age from 6 years to 59 months. The findings showed that the participants even put on weight and grew proportionally taller. Antibiotics have no further advantages.

The study, which was carried out by the departments head of pediatrics, Dr. Yashwant Rao, and his team, revealed that physicians can reduce the use of antibiotics in children. The Center also recently issued a guideline saying that antibiotics should not be used in COVID cases unless there is a clinical suspicion of bacterial infection.
